I like him and will be very disappointed if he moves on. Quality young left back with pace.

Dan Potts has been given a new deal

Might be to keep Steve Potts sweet or he will be 2nd choice next season behind Hendrie

Would have been great to hold onto Johnson I agree. You can't just presume the same decision applies to every situation. Of course with Johnson we were dealing with relegation and the financial implications of that. Hindsight and all that.

Re: Chelsea to bid £20m for Cresswell
I don't see how Upson is a good example. We bought him for much more than his market value due to daft Icelandic owners and I can't see we would have ever had a massive bid for him as he was injured on and off too.

Why not take Glen Johnson as an example, sold for 5m, eventually transferred to Liverpool for 18m and won accolades through the peak of his career including being in the PFA team of the year, Portsmouth player of the season and MOTD goal of the season. Thats without over 50 England national team caps.

Would you really have cared about missing out on a bit of cash to have had a player playing for you with this amount of talent for 6 or 7 seasons even if they turned shit and left on a free?

Re: Chelsea to bid £20m for Cresswell
How about doing something for footballing reasons. All some people on here want to talk about is money, profit and selling the future chances of something decent because there's a risk the player wont become a world beater.

Of course the board will consider a large bid for any player as no one player is bigger than the club but some of the comments on here beggar belief.

We should resist the urge to sell young players who we see as part of the core team and look to match their ambition with a better squad so they want to stay and have a chance of achieving something.

Upson is a good example that comes to mind. We were in the situation where he was clearly worth a lot of money in the market, yet we held onto him and ended up getting nothing, plus he went completely off the boil on the field and played a big part in us being relegated. How different might our recent history have been if we'd sold him at the peak of his value and strengthened the squad? An example where sticking with what we had was fatal.

if the money is right he will go. lets be honest there are only a few clubs in the world who arent 'selling clubs'.
it's the way of the world.

Re: Chelsea to bid £20m for Cresswell
Yes, lots of options there imo, and none of them necessarily better than any other in principle.

Sometimes sticking with a player is the best policy, but I get frustrated with the club who seem to assume it's the best outcome in every case. Opportunities get missed that way.

Re: Chelsea to bid £20m for Cresswell
Alex - so basically we could sell Cresswell and it could be the right way to go or we could keep him and it could be the right way to go and we could pay a lot for players and it could be the right way to go or we could buy cheaper players and it could be the right way to go?

>>> How about we keep Cresswell and build a team with him in it rather than 'gambling'?

But that would be gambling too. You're gambling that Cresswell will be worth more to us if he stays than we can get by selling and using the money elsewhere. There are plenty of players who have had a good season and then faded.

>>> Is there any better example of a player who cost 4-5 million and made the step up in the premiership in the last 12 months than Cresswell and Sakho?

Ings and Austin made the step up and cost less. Mason and Kane cost nothing other than their development costs. Diouf and Bojan cost Stoke £2m between them. I think there are lots of players around who have made the step up. Players who cost a fortune are the exception not the rule.

At the rate we're building, Cresswell will be nearly 30 before we've replaced all the other aged toilet clogging up our squad!

Re: Chelsea to bid £20m for Cresswell
Someone has made a list of our previous left backs. None of them were great at all and I'd imagine that it was thought that they would all do a job and be decent. We've finally signed someone decent in Cresswell and you want to start the search for a left back again?

How about we keep Cresswell and build a team with him in it rather than 'gambling'? In the grand scheme of things even £20m isn't a great deal of money these days. A couple of misjudged signings and that money is gone.

Not saying it's as easy to pick out a player, it's not our job, but West Ham have proved it can be done.

Don't see why people fear the thought of an uncapped left back going for £20 million before a complete first season in the top flight at 25.

Re: Chelsea to bid £20m for Cresswell
BTW I'm not sure it's any easier to buy decent players at an expensive price. Because then you have more to lose. Whatever the club do it isn't easy.

An argument that could have been made to avoid ever signing Cresswell in the first place.

It may be 'difficult', and it certainly takes vision, but I don't think there is any alternative to buying players at value prices. We could just sit on what we've got and depreciate, but that just doesn't work as a strategy. We have to work the transfer market to our favour - it risks failure of course, but so does sitting on our hands.

Re: Chelsea to bid £20m for Cresswell

The lesser left back would weaken the team in that area straight away and the £15m left over could easily be squandered on players that simply aren't good enough. Jarvis being one example.

All you're doing Alex is assuming that it's piss easy to buy decent players for a cheaper price. It's not.

Re: Chelsea to bid £20m for Cresswell
His 'worth' to another team is whatever they are willing to pay for him. I don't think I know anybody who thinks Luke Shaw is worth 30m either.

Re: Chelsea to bid £20m for Cresswell
>>> If it was that easy to sell Cresswell for over £20m and then buy a like for like replacement for around £5m then teams would do it all the time.

It doesn't have to be so black & white though. That £20m could be used to buy a lesser left-back replacement, but a bunch of squad-strengthening elsewhere, and overall be a net benefit to the squad. Clubs need to be flexible with their strategy, or they miss out on value.

Re: Chelsea to bid £20m for Cresswell
How can he be worth £20million?

He can't get anywhere near the England team.

If we were offered anything like that sort of money, we would have to take it.
